Nutrition Care of Rochester offers lactation counseling during your decision making process on how you will feed your child, can help you determine your game plan and preparation methods for baby’s arrival, is available for support and encouragement to reach your goals, can help you overcome any problems, and is there to answer any questions you may have.

As a Certified Lactation Counselor, my scope of practice allows me to discuss and educate parents on breastfeeding while respecting their values, assess the physical and psychosocial aspects of breastfeeding, assess effective/ineffective breastfeeding and milk transfer, incorporate evidence based approaches, and make appropriate referrals when necessary. As well as promote, protect, and support breastfeeding.

If the breastfeeding issue is beyond my scope of practice or it is truly a clinical issue that needs a qualified and experienced International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) then I will refer you to Dianne Cassidy at diannecassidyconsulting.com.
Breastfeeding support that goes beyond breastfeeding:
  • If you or the baby has a food sensitivity, I will help you navigate your diet and make sure you are still getting the nutrients you need without sacrificing your health and energy
  • If you or the baby has a food sensitivity, I will help guide you through ingredient and food label education
  • I can help you determine if medications, supplements, and herbs are compatible with each other and with breastfeeding
  • I can help you safely lose weight without affecting your milk supply
Breastfeeding is a great way to prevent childhood obesity!
  • It teaches the baby how to self-regulate their appetite through suckling rather than gulping from the bottle
  • They become adventurous eaters from tasting all of the different flavors mom eats
  • Breastmilk has a lower protein content than cow’s milk formula so it doesn’t overstimulate the body to increase insulin production and growth factors that contribute to obesity, asthma, allergies, and disturbed immune system
  • Breastmilk creates a perfect balance of healthy intestinal bacteria. A healthy gut promotes overall health and wellbeing and also helps prevent obesity
  • Breastmilk maintains the perfect stomach pH. Our stomach is our first line of defense, if we can stay healthy with the right amount of stomach acid, we won’t get sick and won’t need antibiotics. Antibiotic use can lead to issues but of particular interest it can lead to obesity by disturbing the healthy flora.
  • As the baby grows, breastmilk provides many necessary nutrients in just the right amounts to support normal growth and development, physically and emotionally.
Formula was created when milk was seen as just food. Now we know that breastmilk has so many living and protective properties, it is definitely not just food. It is the biological norm, meaning human milk was made for human babies.

Breastfeeding support is crucial in starting and maintaining exclusive breastfeeding! Seek out help from an expert, build your support network through local breastfeeding groups as a way to reach out for advice or just someone to relate to when you need it, and educate yourself as much as you can.

Breastfeeding support is just a phone call away!
